'Tanners Gate' is a brand new 370 house development in the Locks Heath area situated between Southampton and Portsmouth. The HGP Architects design brings colour, human scale streets and a neighbourhood environment to the bottom of 'Hunts Pond Road'.
From Lynn Crescent to Maud Avenue, and Louis Road to Bedford Drive, the number one reason for moving to your new home may not have been local accessibility.
However, we're here to help. Our surveys, newsletters and resident meet ups work hand in hand with our relationships with local cycle stores and groups, public transport operators, resident groups and travel support groups to make getting from A-B that little bit easier, more affordable, enjoyable and healthy.
For no real reason other than alliteration's sake, we like to get down to 'Tanners' to 'Talk Travel' on a Tuesday. So look out for us in the neighbourhood, or for instant communication and the latest in all things sustainable travel, follow us over at Twitter, with a #TG8, like us on Facebook or even drop us a line!
So far we have helped link new residents with local cycle store Peter Hansford Cycles and worked with First Group, First Wessex and residents to bring new bus 'the 4A' (originally 80A) right past to the front of the new homes. We have organised 2 traffic count surveys, are undertaking our second travel questionnaire and preparing for our first 'Bike Doctor' event.
Our final traffic count will be in 2015, by which point we hope our work and residents efforts will do us all proud in establishing Tanners Gate as a sustainably moving community.

28.08.13 PBA Check In with HCC's Travel Plan Officer
Following our day down at The Gate, our next job was to update our friends at Hampshire County Council. We shared the progress of the last year in learning about and helping travel at the development. We shared our various newsletters and flyers, resident meeting, and TRICS survey results. We explained the challenges and discussed our new ideas. We learnt about travel planning trends across the county and how we are comparing to these.
Happy with our progress and sharing our excitement for the next year of Travel Planning, this meeting helped forge our relationship with HCC's Travel Plan Officer and focus our minds even more to the task at hand.
27.08.13 Getting into Gear Following Bike Doctor Disappointment at The Gate
PBATravel experienced teething problems on this sunny Tuesday afternoon due to an unexpected absence of our resident Bike Dr. Due to family illness we couldn't bring Dr B to the residents this time, leaving some locals understandably disappointed. However, with questionnaires to hand we decided the best cure would be to circle the development and get door knocking.
We still wonder how this annual survey can be best used. But one thing we've learnt is how it can trigger some invaluable conversations.
This exercise brought a new batch of resident contacts talking local travel at the door step and even in some lounges. One resident invited us in for a chat; we obliged and had a great time learning about her daughter's anxious start next week at the new school. Our resident explained how she's taken the week off to support the new Year 7 as she tries out the local bus service. To help out, we set ourselves the challenge of turning around one of our 1 month free bus pass on all Hampshire First services.
With the help of our friends at First, we found out later that our objective was met and indeed our new school starter was accompanied for her first day. We were pleased to be able to help here and were also told, now that our faces can be put to the name - our newsletters will be read with interest by our new Tanners Gate friends!
So, many lessons learnt and a few residents to make up to (which along with Dr B has now been done with the issue of our special vouchers), but all in all a good time spent down at The Gate!

08.08.13 In the Neighbourhood
We dropped by last week to have a look around now all the units have been built - it's really starting to take shape. We also dropped by flyers to say hello and provide the survey links. We're enjoying seeing your responses flying in! Thanks!
28.11.13 Newsletter and Calendar!
The winter Newsletter and 2014 Travel Plan Calendar will soon be distributed to the residents of Tanners Gate. For this calendar, we have had a little help from Locks Heath Junior School. Miss Steeles Year 5 class has kindly drawn thirty persuasive drawings encouraging residents to leave there care at home. We have included a few examples below:
